Kali Linux is a Linux-based operating system designed for digital forensics and penetration testing. It has a wide range of post-exploitation tools to aid in analysis, including dumping hashes from memory and extracting password hashes from the kernel password storage. Kali Linux also includes two powerful rootkits: Evil maid and ClamXav. Kali is completely free, with all software maintained by volunteers like you using your own resources (not unlike many open-source projects). Because of this, you can download and use Kali Linux at no cost. Kali Linux is based on Debian Wheezy, which uses the apt package manager as the primary method of software management, having more than 30,000 available for installation. The developers also have created a custom kernel that is tailored specifically for pen-testing. Kali Linux gets its name from an Indian goddess associated with empowerment, Shakti. The latest version of Ubuntu by default uses systemd as its init system but it is still possible to use Upstart on Ubuntu 16.10 and later versions. Kali Linux Intrepid is based on Debian Wheezy and works on i386 and amd64 platforms. After an automatic update, it will use systemd as its init system. Kali comes with a customized kernel for forensics purposes only. Kali Linux Kirkwood is an unstable rolling release of Kali Linux that focuses on penetration testing of embedded devices such as routers, wireless access points, firewalls, and many others using a customized kernel named KCachegrind. Kali Linux was created by the security community around the world to assist in information security auditing, threat intelligence gathering and reverse engineering, network forensics and penetration testing. Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution featuring a customized kernel, numerous tools built to assist in penetration testing and forensic analysis, and a number of small modifications to the underlying system. Kali has been developed by Mati Aharoni and friends, collectively known as Offensive Security through the Kali Linux project. The project was publicly launched on July 4, 2013. The developers created Kali as a complete rebuild of BackTrack Linux, from which it borrows the underlying architecture and much of the utilities included in its standard install. It has been optimized for performance and to support current hardware across a wide range of platforms (x86-64: AMD64/EM64T and Intel Architecture (IA)-32). One of the most useful features of Kali is the support for many wireless cards and other devices. Kali Linux can also be used as a host for virtual machines, and offers a range of customized penetration-testing and forensics tools. Kali Linux is maintained and funded by Offensive Security Ltd. It is licensed under a dual license model: users have the option of either using it under the GPLv2 license or purchasing a commercial license. The latter provides access to additional technical support and legal protections that allow the purchase of Kali Linux in larger quantities than permitted under the GPLv2. Kali Linux can run on Debian, Ubuntu or any derivative thereof (such as Mint or BackTrack). cfa1e77820
